Heavy Metal Academy

Trained heavy equipment operators are in extremely high demand. We are proud to offer Heavy Metal Academy, an equipment operator program for those looking to start a new career, enhance their skillset, or get a refresher on yellow iron. We have partnered with NCCER and use their nationally recognized program that includes equipment safety, preventative maintenance, and basic machine operation.

40-hour (Specific Equipment) $3495

The one-week equipment course offers training on one type of equipment (Loader, Dozer, or Excavator).  Using NCCER’s nationally recognized curriculum, you will learn equipment safety, preventative maintenance, and basic machine operation.  Students who complete this course will have the fundamental skills to start a career in the earth moving industry on one machine.  There are no pre-requisites to this course.  Approx. 20hrs classroom, 20hrs lab/field (tuition includes all books/fees)

  • HEO Safety 101 - During this module we will cover specific dos and don’ts of working safely around heavy equipment.  Important concepts introduced are incident avoidance, emergency procedures, and operating with a safety-first mindset. 2hr class

Choose one module below:

  • HEO L1 - Introduction for students to the wheel loader.  Students will learn about components, pre-start inspections, and basic earth-moving practices using a loader.  30hrs field, 8hrs class

  • HEO D1 - Introduction for students to the bulldozer.  Learn the basic components, operation tactics, and uses of a dozer.  With hands-on instruction, students will gain familiarity with the controls and learn efficient ways to move and grade material with a dozer.  20hrs field, 18hrs class

  • HEO E1 - Introduction for students to the excavator.  Students will learn components, operation tactics, and uses of an excavator.  During the lab time, students will gain familiarity with controls, learn digging techniques, and trenching safety. 20hrs field, 18hrs class

120-hour Equipment Operator $8995

This three-week course prepares an inexperienced individual to enter the industry as an entry level operator.  Students will be instructed on the basic operating techniques on bulldozer, excavator, and wheel loader.  The course will give the student a general understanding of earth-moving operations and the foundation to build a career on.  There are no pre-requisites to this course.  Approximately 65hrs classroom, 55hrs lab/field (tuition includes all books/fees).   In conjunction with NCCER’s curriculum, HML will cover the following:

  • HE Orientation - Learn the role of heavy equipment operator in the construction industry, explain the uses of heavy equipment, understand the responsibilities and characteristics required of heavy equipment operators. 5hrs class

  • HEO Safety 102 - During this module, you’ll hear about work zone safety requirements, understand hazard communication, and safety practices associated with heavy equipment operation.  10hrs class

  • HE Identification - This module covers identification and description of heavy equipment used in construction and mining. We will also introduce drive and hydraulic systems. 5hrs class

  • HEO L1 - During the loader module, students will learn about components, pre-start inspections, and basic earth-moving practices using a loader.  15hrs field, 7.5hrs class

  • HEO D1 - Introduction for students to the bulldozer.  Learn the basic components, operation tactics, and uses of a dozer.  With hands-on instruction, trainees will gain familiarity with the controls and learn efficient ways to move and grade dirt using the dozer. 20hrs field, 17.5hrs class

  • HEO E1 - Introduction to operation of the excavator.  Students will learn components, operation tactics, and uses of the excavator.  During the lab time, trainees will gain familiarity with controls, learn digging techniques, and trenching safety. 20hrs field, 20hrs class
